Once you have finished your Certificate 3 in aged care and have completed your aged care training then it is time to start considering your career in the aged care community and care sector. Working in aged care is widely believed to be one of the most rewarding and meaningful jobs out there.

This employment path offers endless career opportunities and gives you the chance to connect with people and provide them care and support for them to live fulfilling lives. Aged care support is more than just a job, it is the opportunity to contribute immensely to people’s lives and to make a real difference. Keep reading for seven reasons to get qualified and grow your career in the aged care and community care sector.

1. A Workplace with Variety

Every day will be different as you will carry out a range of different activities. You will be helping your client with a range of activities as they go about their day. These could include helping your client get showered or changed, supervising them taking their medication, taking them to social gatherings, or planning activities.

There may even be days where you just keep your client company and sit with them to have a chat. You are likely to engage with a range of different people during your shift, keeping you on your feet and keeping you engaged.

2. Range of Shifts and Hours

Working as an aged care worker is the perfect career to suit different lifestyles and personal commitments. It doesn’t have to be a standard 9 to 5 job, there are a range of rosters and hours that you could undertake.

If you don’t want full-time work, there are options for casual or part-time hours, as well as night shifts, or being on a rotating roster.

3. Spending Time with each Individual and Get Inspired

Being an aged care support worker means that you get to spend a large amount of time getting to know the people you look after, and hearing their stories. This is a great source of inspiration and something that will definitely keep your work interesting.

There is a lot to learn from these people, they even may be able to offer you some advice on an issue that you might have in our daily life!

4. Making a Genuine Difference to People’s Lives 

Working as an aged care worker means you are making a genuine difference to people’s lives. As a direct result of your job, you are helping people enjoy a higher quality of life.

You are helping some of the most vulnerable members of society to feel supported and cared for. You can walk away at the end of your shift knowing that you have made someone’s day that bit better.

5. A Sense of Purpose

If completing your certificate 3 in aged care doesn’t give you a sense of purpose, then starting your career as an aged care worker definitely will.

Leaving your job every day knowing that you have improved the quality of someone’s day will give you a sense of fulfilment and purpose. It is touching to be able to make a positive difference to someone’s day and you will feel a sense of pride for the work that you do.

6. Sense of Achievement

Perhaps you help someone to pursue a new hobby, or to achieve a goal that they have been working towards for a while. An important part of your role as an aged care worker is helping people to do and achieve things throughout their day.

You will feel a sense of delight when you see people achieving things and it is rewarding to know that you were part of it, guiding them along the way.

7. Learning and Seeing Things from a Different Perspective

As an aged care worker, you have genuine interactions with the elderly. Your clients would have had many life experiences and may see the world in a different way than you do.

Spending time with and talking to these people can make you see things in a different light and give you a new perspective on life.
