Course Overview

This course addresses the skills and knowledge for those responsible for stopping and starting traffic in temporary traffic management using a stop/slow bat or boom gate. This program is a good entry point for those wishing to establish themselves into the traffic control/management industry.

Upon completion of this course, students will be issued with a SafeWork NSW Traffic Control Work Training (TCWT) card. Vigil Training College is approved by SafeWork NSW.The 

Traffic Controller Course is also commonly known as Blue Card Traffic Controller Course in Sydney.

Course Duration and Delivery Method

The course is delivered through a combination of the following:
1. PART 1: Pre-Attendance Self Study
2. PART 2: One (1) day of Classroom Based Training Session
3. PART 3: Half (1/2) a day of Practical Assessment

PART 1: Pre-Attendance Self Study

  1. Your pre-attendance material learning material will be issued to you through our Online Learning Portal. You must read this before attendance the classroom-based training session.
  2. This will take between 2-4 hours.

PART 2: One (1) day of Classroom Based Training Session

  1. This session involves classroom-based training with your trainer & assessor. During this session, you will also participate in some activities and theoretical assessments.
  2. Duration: 8.5 hours (including breaks)
  3. Location: Parramatta, NSW
  4. Upon successful completion of the theory assessments on this day, you will be issued with a Statement of Completion (SOC). This will be valid for 90 days and it allows you to work as a Traffic Controller under supervision.
  5. You will be booked for your practical assessment (PART 3) on this day.

PART 3: Half (1/2) a day of Practical Assessment

  1. This session involves practical assessment on a live road.
  2. Duration: 2-4 hours
  3. Location: Parramatta, NSW
  4. Upon successful completion of the practical assessment on this day, you will be issued with a Statement of Attainment (SOA) and the SafeWork NSW-issued Traffic Control Work Training Card (TCWT).

Course Fees

The course fee is $325. You pay NOTHING extra! This includes the following:

  1. Classroom Training Session; and
  2. Practical Assessment Session; and
  3. SafeWork NSW Card Fee.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal pre-requisites or formal education requirements for this course.

However, students must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be at least 17 years old; and
  • An adequate level of literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills; and
  • Have a 100 Points of ID (SafeWork Requirement) *; and
  • Have a Unique Student Identifier (USI); and
  • Have basic computer skills; and
  • Have the resources required (see list below).

100 Points of ID (SafeWork Requirement)

SafeWork NSW requires you to present ORIGINAL Evidence of Identity (EOI) documents. This is required during both classroom training and practical assessment days.

Common combinations include:

  1. Passport & Driver Licence or Photo ID
  2. Australia Citizenship Certificate & Driver Licence

Resources Required:

Students enrolling in this course must have access to the following resources:

  • Laptop/Computer
  • Internet
  • Acrobat Reader
  • Industry Standard PPE for Practical Assessment – Long/Work Pants, Long Shirt, Closed Shoes (preferably Hard Caps).

Certification

Statement of Completion (SOC):

  • Upon successfully completing the classroom-based training session, you will receive a Statement of Completion (SOC).
  • This allows you to work as a Traffic Controller under supervision.
  • Validity Period: 90 days.
    You must attend the practical assessment session before it’s expiry.

SafeWork NSW Traffic Control Work Training (TCWT) Card:

  • To receive this Card, you must have completed both the Classroom Session (1-day) & Practical Session (0.5 day).
  • SafeWork Card Fee is included in your course fee.
  • Validity: No expiry.
    However, if you have not worked as a traffic controller for 2 consecutive years, your card will no longer be valid.

Statement of Attainment (SOA):

  • Upon successful completion of both the Classroom Session (1-day) & Practical Session (0.5 day), you will also receive a Statement of Attainment (SOA) in RIISS00054 - Traffic Controller Skill Set. The Skillset consists of four (4) Nationally Recognised Units of Competencies:
    • RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace.
    • RIIWHS201E Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures.
    • RIIWHS205E Control traffic with stop-slow bat.
    • RIIWHS206 Control traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs.

Learning Outcomes

During this course, you will learn the below:

  • Stop/direct road users using a stop/slow bat and understand stopping sight distances.
  • Monitor traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs according to traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes.
  • Maintain traffic incident reports.
  • Understand the Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs) also known as Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) for the site.
  • Assess and respond to changes in the environment, for example traffic volumes, weather conditions, road conditions, Work Health and Safety (WHS) and operational requirements.
  • Carry out risk assessments for personal safety.
  • Participate in toolbox talks (specific to traffic control)
  • Use communication methods and devices.
  • Conform to traffic control policy and procedures.

Training & Assessment Requirements:

Training will include:

  • Classroom activities
  • Theory questionnaires and group activities
  • Minimum practical traffic control simulation using full scale devices and vehicles in controlled and safe environments.

Assessment will include:

  • Theory questionnaires and activities
  • On the job practical application and observation.

Employment Pathway:

This course allows you to work as a Traffic Controller in NSW.

Qualification Pathways:

This course provides credit towards various qualifications in the Resources & Infrastructure Industry Training Package.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):

SafeWork NSW provides guidance regarding RPL for the Traffic Control Course here.

RPL can only be granted for the training component, and you must attend the assessment competent of the course. If you think that you may be eligible for an RPL, please contact our team on 1800 97 97 66 to discuss the requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I require a White Card for this Course?

No. However, you will need a White Card if you are working as a Traffic Controller on a Construction Site in NSW. We recommend getting the White Card (here).

How soon after completing the Traffic Controller Course can you start working?

After you have completed the classroom-based training session and you have been issued your Statement of Completion (SOC), you can work immediately under supervision. After completing the practical assessment, you will be issued the SafeWork NSW Traffic Control Work Training (TCWT) card allowing you to work without supervision. Remember – your SOC is valid for 90 days.

What work can I do with the Traffic Control Work Training Card (TCWT)?

You can control traffic using a stop-slow bat. You can also control traffic using a temporary device, such as a portable boom date.

Does the SafeWork NSW Traffic Control Card Expire?

No. However, if you have not worked as a traffic controller for 2 consecutive years, your card will no longer be valid. You can read more about this on SafeWork NSW’s website here.

What is a Unique Student Identifier (USI)?

A USI is your individual education number for life. It also gives you an online record of your vocational education and training (VET) undertaken in Australia. If you're at university, TAFE or doing other nationally recognised training, you need a USI.

You can replace it online through Service NSW. Click here.
