The initial five-day course is for individuals who want to become Health & Safety Representatives (HSRs). The one-day refresher training course is for individuals who want to renew their skills and knowledge as an HSR.
What is a Health and Safety Representative (HSR)?
The role of the Health and Safety Representative (HSR) is elected and voluntary. The role is primarily to liaise with other staff to identify health and safety issues and convey these to management. HSRs are elected by fellow staff to represent the views of the staff group. HSRs play a key role in prevention of workplace injury and illness, and promotion of good WHS practice. WHS Act does not impose specific obligations on HSRs but provides HSRs with powers and functions.
Do I have to do this course to become an HSR?
Training for the role of an HSR is not mandatory, however you are encouraged to take up this training to provide you with the skills and knowledge to perform your role effectively. An HSR can request training, if this request is made, a Person Conducting Business or Undertaking (PCBU) must allow this to occur. The Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act) provides entitlements for health and safety representatives (HSRs) and deputy HSRs to attend SafeWork NSW approved training courses. Finally, unless you are trained you will not have the power to issue Provisional Improvement Notice (PIN) and direct unsafe work to cease in your work group.
What Pathways do I have available once I complete this course?
After completion of the course approved under the WHS Act, as an HSR you may wish to pursue more formalised training or seek recognition of prior learning (RPL), leading to a vocational qualification.
There are no pre-requisite requirements to undertake Health and Safety Representative (HSR) Training.
