As with everything, there are some essentials about first aid that you must know when becoming an Aged Care Worker. This may seem confusing at first but keep reading to get a brief overview to give you a better understanding of the first aid essentials for aged care workers.

Know the Basics Well

Carers have a wide range of responsibilities, with the most important role being to keep those in your care safe. Ensuring that you will be confident and competent in coping with a medical emergency is essential for the safety of the people you are caring for. The five main skills that you should know how to respond to like the back of your hand are, choking, bleeding, anaphylaxis, seizures, and falls.

Being Able to Respond to an Emergency

It is essential that when you are working as an aged care worker, you can recognise and assess an emergency. Recognising an emergency means that you can then assess the severity of the casualty, the need for first aid response, and decipher whether there is any more danger. As an aged care worker, it is important that you can think fast on your feet when responding to an emergency. Many of the people you will be looking after are extremely elderly and will most likely require extra assistance in times of emergency or distress.

Apply Appropriate First Aid Procedures

Once you have been able to recognise and assess an emergency, it is essential that you know how to apply the appropriate first aid procedures. Because the people you will be working with are extremely vulnerable, it is essential that you act fast and act correctly to avoid any more harm to the victim.

It is essential that you know how to provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles and use available resources and equipment to make the victim as comfortable as possible. While operating the first aid equipment, it is important you monitor the victim’s condition and respond accordingly when it changes.

Communicate Details of the Incident

There may be times when you are working a night shift, or someone is on their break so you are working by yourself and disaster strikes. In these situations, it is important that you are able to remember what happened so you can accurately tell the details of the incident to emergency services when they arrive.

It is also essential to report the details of the incident in line with your workplace procedures or complete the applicable documentation. Even if you are not working by yourself and there are other bystanders, it is essential that you retain information about what happened because you were the person administering first aid so people will come to you first with questions about what happened.

Review the Incident

After you have recognised the incident, performed your first aid skills, and communicated the details of the incident, it is essential that you review what happened and the possible psychological impacts on yourself. Some emergencies may be quite traumatic for you or any of the bystanders, so it is important to seek help if you need it.

After the incident, it is also essential to provide a review to the first aid response. This could include anything that you think worked really well, and areas that could be improved upon. This will ensure that the first aid responses in the place where you work can continue to be improved to ensure the best possible response is provided in times of emergency.
